“To build the two-lane county bridge, the crew carved a foothold into a steep canyon that was surrounded by large redwood trees. Working in difficult conditions with limited access, the job was completed safely and on time.”

— Marlin Murray, Project Manager, Joseph J. Albanese, Inc.

At Joseph J. Albanese, Inc., we are committed to getting the job done safely with relentless and deliberate execution. Our team is devoted to bringing the highest level of quality to every project we do for our clients.

Project:

Redwood Road Bridge

Corralitos, Santa Cruz Mountains, California

Overview:

The Joseph J. Albanese, Inc. team built a new two-lane bridge to provide access on the only public road in a narrow canyon. The bridge’s location is unique because it does not cross the canyon. Instead, it runs alongside the canyon in Viaduct fashion. It is located in a turn in the road with the creek running under it, creating a waterfall on the downhill side.

Services:

  • Functioned as the Prime Contractor and delivered multi-scope capabilities, giving the County a single point of contact

  • Delivered multi-scope capabilities, including Demolition, Grading & Paving, Structural Concrete, Sawcutting & Coredrilling, Virtual Construction and Bridge Construction

  • Provided Grading and Paving for the finished bridge

  • Performed demolition of the old steel military-style, single-lane bridge, which was too narrow and had limited load capacity

  • Constructed a bridge designed by the County of Santa Cruz to meet Caltrans specifications. The bridge increased the load capacity and widened the road for sight distance and for traffic to pass.

  • Facilitated smooth communication with the county and local residents

  • Utilized Virtual Construction, including GPS to ensure an accurate implementation

Highlights:

  • Replaced existing single-lane bridge located in a narrow canyon with a two-lane bridge built to Caltrans design specifications

  • Removed large redwood trees to expand right-of-way while protecting all       other trees

  • Constructed soldier pile retaining wall to begin the widening and provide a place to stage materials and equipment while still maintaining access for residents

  • Ensured safety for employees and the traveling public while the entry access was a one-lane road that had to stay open during construction

  • Performed work successfully in an environmentally sensitive area while in coordination with biological monitoring by the County

  • Constructed the new bridge and viaduct, which improved sight distance and gave residents additional turnout for traffic to pass
